A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
