A defense official has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese-made cars, and staff have been advised to avoid discussing classified information in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of government operations, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
