The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
