Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
